Production method
Veno Fish Farm A/S owns two on-growing sites in the Limfjord. These
are stocked both with spat (juvenile oysters) which we produce
ourselves and with wild-caught oysters which weigh less than 70 grams.
The sites use long-lines from which modules, each consisting of 10
net-trays, are suspended. Here the oysters graze on the abundant
microscopic algae which is their natural food. The oysters can reach
market size in 3 years.
Growing oysters does not create a loading on the sea-bed. On the
contrary, the amount of waste released is far exceeded by the amount
of nutrients which the oysters remove from the fjord in the form of
algae, which they eat.
In 2005 the Limfjord was awarded status as free of Bonamia ostreae and
Marteilia refringens, which means we can export our oysters to the
whole of Europe.
